Halal Restaurants in Korea promotion

The nation's tourism authorities will hold events to promote halal restaurants across the country next month, to help Muslim tourists locate halal restaurants here, according to the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO), Wednesday.

The KTO and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism have been holding the Halal Restaurant Week Korea event since 2016 for the convenience of Muslim visitors and to address one of the biggest hurdles they face while visiting Korea.
Halal restaurants do not sell pork and have some halal foods on their menus. Halal means "lawful" or "permitted" in Arabic, which means the food is prepared in accordance with religious rules.
The annual event will last for two months through Oct. 31. During the event, Muslim visitors will enjoy discounts at 152 KTO-designated halal restaurants and 40 major tourist destinations across the country.
Visitors can bring coupon books, which will be distributed at KTO's overseas branches and tourist information centers in Korea, or visit hrwkorea.or.kr to download mobile coupons.
The number of participating restaurants has grown from 95 in 2016 to 152 this year.
Before the event, the KTO will also hold a conference at the InterContinental Seoul COEX on Thursday. During the conference, many Muslim-related companies will provide information on their businesses and relevant agencies will offer tourists the chance to experience Korean cuisine made with halal ingredients.

Namsangol Hanok Village Night Market and special Chuseok Activities

Seoulites will have a chance to experience the traditional culture of the 1392-1910 Joseon Kingdom as various events including a night market will be offered at Namsangol Hanok Village in Seoul during the fall.

Especially during the Chuseok holiday, which falls between Sept. 12 to 14 this year, a variety of traditional performances, experiences and cuisine will be offered under the name of "Standard of Chuseok."

On the first day, there will be a program where visitors can try making traditional delicacies such as "songpyeon," a half-moon-shaped rice cake usually eaten on Chuseok, and "yugwa," a deep-fried sweet rice cake. Traditional food masters will provide guidance and participants can take their tasty treats home.
On the second day, performers will present a traditional seasonal performance with a cow theme, which used to be held during the harvest season around Chuseok. After the performance, visitors will be invited to participate in a traditional dance using long ribbons.
On Saturday, the last day of the event, visitors will be able to see 15 types of "jeon," or pan-fried delicacies which are typically served during Chuseok.
Also from Sept. 14, the "1890 Namsangol Night Market" will reopen there following a renovation of the village. It will operate every Saturday through Oct. 26, except for Oct. 12.
The market's overarching theme is a night fair of the late Joseon era. Leaflets and signs will be written in calligraphy, and the currency unit will be not won but "nyang," which was used during Joseon Kingdom. Merchants will wear traditional hanbok and use Joseon-era accents.
The market will open at 4 p.m. and close at 9:30 p.m.
This year, the night market will adopt different themes every week, where one week sellers will offer colorful handicrafts and the next week stalls will be filled with healthy agricultural products.
On Sept. 14 and Oct. 5, the market will invite local governments to sell their specialties at prices discounted by 10 percent to 30 percent.
On Sept. 21 and Oct. 19, Seoul Global Center will host a flea market under the name of the "Global Night Market," where foreign residents will sell items from their homelands.
Visitors to the hanok village can enjoy various traditional games including ring toss, "yunnori" (a traditional board game using four sticks) and "jegi chagi" (tassel kicking) free of charge. There will also be other programs where foreign visitors can learn about Korean culture and Chuseok.

Starting with the opening ceremony on the first day, the festival will include a bibimbap feast and an exhibition on traditional artworks, costumes, handicrafts, and paper and pens in the main venue of the Insa Art Center.

Visitors can also participate in making ceramics, ornaments and traditional paper, and enjoy parades of "hanbok," the Korean traditional attire, and Korean traditional music performances.

Air Pollution

There may be some times when the Air Pollution is high, pollution can NOT always be seen, especially PM  2.5, which is extremely small, smaller than a human hair.

Here are two sites that monitor Air Pollution in Korea.

1. http://aqicn.org/city/incheon

The US Military in Korea uses the above website, AQI.

2. http://aqicn.org/city/incheon

On days when the PM 2.5 is HIGH, you should wear a proper Mask, such as KF94 or KF99.

If you can buy 10 'masks' for 1,000 Won or a cheap price, it is NOT a proper mask and will NOT filter out PM 2.5 or PM 10 particles.

If you go in to most pharmacies or convenience stores a KF 94 Mask will cost between 2,000 - 3,000 Won. If you buy a multi-pack of masks, you can get them at a cheaper price.

Here is an example of what a KF 94 Mask looks like.

http://shopping.interpark.com/product/productInfo.do?prdNo=6734817477&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI2ILvt_2i5AIVj6uWCh3L5gxbEAQYAiABEgJbGPD_BwE

There will likely be Student Groups selling KF 94 Masks during the Fall Semester.

On days when the PM 2.5 levels are high, if you don't wear a mask, you may experience coughing, strange feelings in your nose.throat, wheezing or difficulty breathing.

Protect your health, and check the Air Pollution levels before you go outside, and if the levels are high on that day, avoid outside exercise and activities.

ASEAN Korea Academic Essay Contest

Call for Papers:
2019 ASEAN-Korea Academic Essay Contest

*** Submission Period Extended (31 Oct) ***

Organized by ASEAN-Korea Centre and ASEAN University Network (AUN)

Supported by ASEAN Secretariat, ROK Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pukyoung National University Global Area Studies Center, Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam

Background:
With the beginning of dialogue partnership in 1989, ASEAN and Korea have become strong partners in all aspects of political-security, economy and socio-culture. ASEAN is Korea’s second largest trading partner and third largest investment destination, while Korea is ASEAN’s fifth largest trading partner. ASEAN is also the most visited overseas destination for Koreans, and the people-to-people exchanges between the two regions has surpassed 11 million in 2018. With this strengthening ASEAN-Korea ties, the dialogue partnership is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, and the ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit is to be held in Korea for the third time, followed by the Inaugural Mekong-ROK Summit.

Against such backdrop, the ASEAN-Korea Centre, an inter-governmental organization mandated to promote economic and socio-cultural cooperation between ASEAN and Korea, is hosting the 2019 ASEAN-Korea Academic Essay Contest inviting students of ASEAN and Korea to share their perspectives and knowledge on ASEAN and ASEAN-Korea relations. The young perspectives of the youth of ASEAN and Korea will contribute toward building a true, genuine and lasting partnership.

THEME (select one of the following themes)
1. ASEAN and Korea in the Emerging Indo-Pacific
With 65% of the world population and over 60% of global GDP, the Indo-Pacific has come into the limelight as it has also become a main theatre of China’s Belt and Road Initiative and the United States’ free and open Indo-Pacific strategy. As regional entities, ASEAN and Korea share the regional outlook which naturally leads them for cooperation. In what ways can ASEAN and Korea increase their cooperation to navigate through the tides of the emerging Indo-Pacific?

2. ASEAN Connectivity and Beyond
ASEAN visions “to achieve a seamlessly and comprehensively connected and integrated region that will promote competitiveness, inclusiveness, and a greater sense of Community” as proclaimed in the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity 2025. A well-connected ASEAN will bring its goods, services and people together, creating a foundation for a more resilient, competitive and prosperous ASEAN Community. What are the key areas ASEAN should focus on to fulfill its connectivity visions? How can ASEAN Connectivity achieve a regional integration that will connect beyond the ASEAN region?

3. Toward a Reciprocal Cultural Exchanges: ASEAN Wave in Korea
With increasing interactions and socio-cultural exchanges between ASEAN and Korea, the perception of ASEAN has been expanding in Korea. However, while Korean cultures are widely spread in the ASEAN region with the tides of the ‘Korean Wave’, understanding of ASEAN’s unique and diverse cultures are still in the growing stage in Korea. How can we effectively promote ASEAN’s unique and diverse cultures in Korea? In what ways can ASEAN and Korea cooperate to facilitate and promote the ‘ASEAN Wave’ in Korea?

4. 30 Years of ASEAN-Korea Relations: Retrospect and Prospect
The ASEAN-Korea relations began with the establishment of the sectoral dialogue partnership in 1989. Since then, the relationship has expanded and deepened to become a strategic partnership for peace and prosperity in 2010. This year, ASEAN and Korea celebrate the 30th anniversary of their dialogue partnership. How has the ASEAN-Korea relations evolved over the past 30 years? In celebration of the “Buwan ng Wika” (Philippines’ National Language Month), Philippine Women’s Club (PWC) invites everyone to join them in learning about Filipino culture through food. On Thursday, August 29th, from 10:00am to 12:00pm, PWC members will be teaching us how to cook two popular Filipino dishes: chicken adobo and pork lumpia.

“Adobo” is a popular Filipino dish. It is usually made of a type of meat and marinated in vinegar, soy sauce, garlic and black peppercorns. It is browned in oil and simmered in its marinade.  Although adobo can be cooked using other types of meat like pork, seafood, etc., for this class, we will be using chicken.

“Lumpia” is a fried spring roll. While it originated from China,  “Lumpiang Shanghai,” (as Filipinos would call it) has been a staple in many Filipino traditions. Lumpia is a savory snack made of very thin crepe that envelopes a mixture of fillings consisting of ground pork, vegetables, etc.

The fee for this class is 15,000won (per participant, for the 2 dishes). All proceeds will be given to Talk to Me, an organization that helps marriage immigrants to adapt in Korean society. *Pre-registration & pre-payment for this class is required*
